Our Service Philosophy

At Goldfish Counselling, we believe that every individual and family is unique, deserving of respect, understanding, and unwavering support.
Our philosophy is grounded in empathy, compassion, and a commitment to nurturing the wellbeing of all people, with particular expertise in supporting neurodivergent children, adults, and families.

We honour difference, embrace diversity, and meet every client where they are.

Embracing Individuality

We celebrate the richness of human diversity and recognise that each person’s journey is distinctive.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach here. Every service is thoughtfully tailored to your needs, experiences, values, and goals.

Strengths-Based Practice

Our work is guided by the belief that everyone holds strengths and capacities, even when life feels hard.
We focus on uncovering and building upon these strengths to foster growth, confidence, and resilience.

Collaboration and Understanding

We see counselling as a partnership. We listen deeply, value your insights, and work alongside you to create meaningful change.
For children and families, this may also mean collaborating with parents, caregivers, or educators to build consistency and shared understanding across environments.

Holistic Wellbeing

We view wellbeing through a holistic lens that includes emotional, social, cognitive, and physical aspects of life.
Our goal is not only to address current challenges but also to equip you with tools and perspectives for long-term thriving.

Lived Experience and Professional Expertise

Goldfish Counselling was founded by Melissa Richards, a counsellor with both professional training and lived experience as a neurodivergent individual and parent.
This perspective brings empathy, authenticity, and insight to every session, helping clients feel seen and understood on a deeper level.

Empowering Communication

We believe everyone deserves to express themselves confidently and be heard.
We are passionate about supporting all forms of communication, including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), to empower individuals to share their voice in ways that work best for them.

Family-Focused Support

We understand that challenges rarely occur in isolation. They affect the whole family system.
Our work often includes supporting parents, siblings, and caregivers to strengthen understanding, connection, and collaboration within the family unit.

Advocacy and Self-Advocacy

We are committed to helping individuals and families feel empowered in their communities, educational settings, and daily lives.
Through awareness, education, and practical tools, we support you in advocating for your needs and in developing self-advocacy skills for the future.

Safe and Inclusive Space

We provide a warm, inclusive, and non-judgmental environment where all identities, neurotypes, and lived experiences are respected and affirmed.
Goldfish Counselling is a proud LGBTQIA+ affirming practice, welcoming clients of all gender identities, sexualities, and relationship structures.

Whether you are seeking support for neurodivergent needs or for life’s everyday challenges, you will find a space where you are welcomed exactly as you are.

At Goldfish Counselling, we are not just counsellors. We are allies in your journey toward understanding, growth, and wellbeing.

Together, we explore challenges with curiosity and compassion, celebrate strengths, and build pathways toward a more connected and fulfilling life.
